I’m so excited to share the next part of this series, featuring our wonderful wedding day coordinator, Angie. Angie first joined Alicia Keats Weddings & Events in 2018, and she very quickly became an indispensable part of the team. Beyond her attention to detail and organizational expertise, Angie comes into any room or situation with her warm and generous nature.

Tell us a little bit about yourself

I have worked in the weddings and events industry for over a decade. I started my journey as a server at a local venue, and was very quickly promoted to a venue coordinator role within that same company. After seven years there, I decided I wanted a change. I transitioned to a local catering company, and the time I spent there helped me realize that I wanted to specialize in weddings.

It was after that I found my way to Alicia Keats Weddings & Events, where I started as her assistant on Valentine’s Day, 2018. It was shortly thereafter that I started coordinating weddings under the AK brand!

What made you choose wedding planning as a career?

To be honest, I feel like weddings chose me.

My first job in the industry was meant to be just a summer gig. I didn’t anticipate how much I would fall in love with helping couples create their special day.

What do you love about wedding planning?

It’s really so special to get to work with couples and see their dream days become a reality. I’m a creative person, and I love being able to put that skill towards finding new ways to introduce the couple’s personalities into the wedding itself. Plus, I’m always inspired by all the amazing, talented vendors we have here in Vancouver and the rest of BC.

How would you describe your planning style?

I’m an organized planner to my core. I like to ensure that every detail is well thought out ahead of the day, so that there are no surprises (or as few surprises as possible) on the day itself.

I’m a visual person, so I tend to sit down with the timeline the night before the wedding so that I can visualize exactly how everything will run.

The other thing that’s important to me is to be friendly. I’m there to support my couples and keep them excited about their big day, so I do my best to bring a positive energy into every conversation.

Where do you find inspiration?

My biggest source of inspiration is this beautiful province. I love finding ways to celebrate our local landscape and produce in our weddings.

What are your top 5 favourite Vancouver wedding venues?

Vancouver has so many wonderful venues to offer, and there’s so much variety in terms of style and location (as you can see from my list):

  • Shaughnessy Restaurant is great for a smaller wedding, and the space is filled with light and a fantastic view of the VanDusen Gardens.
  • UBC Botanical Gardens is the perfect outdoor space.
  • Pipe Shop has a beautiful blend of modern and rustic details that lends itself to creative setups.
  • The Wallace really pays homage to the Vancouver port with fun industrial design elements — but it’s also a blank canvas for wedding design.
  • Grouse Mountain acts almost as a destination wedding venue with gorgeous views of Vancouver.

What are your top 5 planning tips?

It’s hard to narrow down to just five! But here are some important ones that I like to share with my couples:

  1. Infuse your wedding with personal touches. This could be a signature cocktail, welcome bags with your favourite treats, or a theme that reflects who you are as a couple.
  2. Schedule a few minutes between photos and the reception to enjoy a little time together as newlyweds. Your wedding day will go by very quickly, so it’s important to have space for you two to enjoy each other and create little memories together.
  3. Provide guests with disposable cameras to take snapshots at the reception. These will be so fun to flip through after the wedding!
  4. Spreadsheets are your best friends.
  5. Trust your vendor team! We have a talented industry of wedding vendors in Vancouver, and they are all dedicated to creating a wonderful day for you.

What do you like to do in your spare time?

I love having the wonderful BC landscape at my doorstep, and I try to spend time in it as much as I can. When I’m not working on a wedding, you can find me climbing, hiking, or biking in the forest!
